1. qa = Start recording a macro. The macro will be named “a”
  2. (make your edits)
  3. q = Stop recording the macro

Now you can execute the macro with the command @a. You can even specify how many times to execute the macro like this 100@a which will execute the macro 100 times.

ctrl-a = Increment the number under the cursor
ctrl-x = Decrement the number under the cursor

Additional Details

  • If there’s no number under the cursor Vim will move the cursor forward to the next number on the line and increment it
  • Works with decimal, octal and hex numbers by default
  • Can be configured to work with letters too (see :help nrformats for details)
